While listening to the radio the other day I found myself listening to Jan D’Atri ,a local Arizona TV and radio personality and author.

I was very impressed by her discussion about the value of family and some of the simple things in families that connect us. The focus of her discussion was the joy of cooking within a family and the memories many women have of spending wonderful times, while they were young, cooking with their mothers and grandmothers.

Jan went on to encourage women to gather their precious family recipes along with the precious memories and commit them to paper. She has herself published a cookbook of memorable family recipes.

She also shares some wonderful stories of her own mother and the relationships that have become such a treasure over the years. A great reminder of what is most important in this life – family.

For a heart touching story check out this blog post by Jan’s mother.

Jan’s website has some great recipes you might want to try!

Here is one of my favorites.

The Story of an American Hero

2008-12-12_2207

Early on the morning of Dec. 8, 1941, nine Japanese fighter planes swooped down on Malalag Bay in the Philippines and strafed and sunk two U.S. Navy seaplanes at the very outset of World War II.  All of the Americans escaped unharmed except Ensign Robert G. Tills, 23, of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, who was cut down by machine gun bullets. “Ensign Robert Tills died in the fusillade of bullets from the Japanese strafers, the first American naval officer killed in the defense of the Philippines,” the Naval Historical Center wrote. Cute Kids!!!

Emma and Taylor

For many years we have been friends with a sweet young woman who is going through some very difficult trials. We have known Mandy since she was in high school with our children. Now Mandy is a wonderful mother of six beautiful children living here in the Phoenix area. Two years ago Mandy gave birth to conjoined twin girls Emma and Taylor who are precious little miracles to say the least. After their birth the doctors didn’t hold out much hope for the babies, but these little girls have defied medical expectations and recently celebrated their 2nd birthday. I can’t imagine how difficult life is for Mandy and Tor her husband. We all know what it is like to raise a family under normal conditions; this little family is going through so much more than most…

I make a request today that you visit their website and please be generous and make a donation to this family as they prepare to find hearts that will beat separately for these special little babies. Above all else please remember to pray for them that God will give this family courage and faith as they prepare to make the arrangements to separate these precious babies. Little Emma is in critical need of surgery to prevent further damage being done to her side of the heart they share. They are going back to Seattle Children’s Hospital this month for preventative surgery and possibly even separation surgery to save their lives. I know that our collective prayers and generous donations will go a long way to assist this family in their time of need.

As we approach the Holiday Season, regardless of your belief, this is a time for family; or it certainly should be.

As we get closer to the Holiday season our lives become filled with the trivial logistics of the season – shopping, parties and travel plans.

I wanted to do something different this year and not become bogged down on the trivial stuff and rather spend some time thinking about something so much more important.

We have young Americans away from home and in harm’s way. They are defending this country from our enemies and helping to create an opportunity of freedom for others. While doing the ugly work of overcoming those that seek to destroy they are building into the lives of young Iraqi and Afghan children a hope that their future will be better than their past. Bringing the hope of freedom that will bring the opportunity to take their lives in their own hands and fill it with joy rather than fear.

One can only imagine what it must be like to be a parent of a young child in Iraq and to look at that child knowing that this child may have a better life than they did. The truth being that their child’s freedom came at the sacrifice of the young men and women of the US military.

As I reflected on their great sacrifice I thought of those young men and women who paid the ulitimate sacrifice and their families who will spend a Holiday Season with an empty chair at the family dinner table.

So to make sure I don’t forget who they are this Christmas season I will profile some of the bravest of Americans, who have given their lives in the service of this country and in the service of freedom – freedom for us and freedom for strangers in foreign lands.

Here is one such hero: Holly McGeogh

Nev and Barbie

As a mother who has experienced the loss of a child (Click for my own story); I know that the loss of a child is a life long journey.

Heritage Makers storybooks are an amazing way to transform a time of sadness and loss into a journey of comfort, joy and gratitude.

 Here is one mothers story.

I remember when our other four children were growing up we would fill balloons with helium and attach little notes to the balloons and each year on our little Clark’s birthday we would send them heavenward to let him know we were thinking about him. I know we did it mostly because we wanted our children to know they had a brother who was our first born and we wanted to make sure he would never be forgotten.  I came across an old proverb a while back that says it all…”You live as long as you are remembered”. It is wonderful to know that because of Heritage Makers these precious little lives will always be remembered and live on…WOW!

Well our blog has been back seat to a crazy 4 weeks over the Christmas holiday as we juggled business, travelling, spending time with family and the usual holiday hustle around the malls and shopping centers.

So to get a great start on the new year we enjoyed a wonderful cruise to Mexico as a reward for achieving Top Achiever Club within our Heritage Makers business. What a great reward for a year of really hard work!

We left most of our cares behind and allowed ourselves to relax, enjoy the sun and fresh air. We crusied from Los Angeles and visited 3 sun filled ports in Mexico.

It gave us a chance to lose ourselves while reading a couple of novels, taking lots of photos and great walks on the beaches of Mexico.

We look forward to achieving Top Achievers Club status again this year and another cruise in January 2009 to the western Caribbean.

While looking through the great box of photos we have, I found some photos that bring back great memories and stories.

One of our many sojurns in this life was in Africa, our birth place. We used to take vacations to a wonderful hot springs in the remote part of northern South Africa. We would enjoy several days of camping and exploring the area. These were great times that we remeber with great fondness. Simple days camping, swimming, daytime naps in the shade and the companionship of our small children. What fun we had.

One such treat was to explore the Baobab trees in the area.

The Baobab tree will always bring back special memories for us. As you can see they are very unique trees that are found in the arid parts of Africa and India.  They are often hard to describe to people and do justice to such a magnificent tree.

So here are some photos including photos of “the Baobab tree kids”.
